Recording Halloway
While working with recording vocals for GHO$T and Chief Tuté, I have also recorded Halloway for 2 track EP coming out at the end of this Tri. The session was a smooth session where my self and Halloway wanted to experiment with microphones best suited for his vocals. We decided to use the industry standard for professional vocal recordings, the Neumann U87 and another great microphone for vocals, the AKG C414. We wanted to capture the same take on both mics so we had to set-up both mics next to each other but since we were going to only take one take from either mic, we didn’t need to worry about phase issues.

After around the second take, from the control room in the NEVE studio, I decided to tell the artist that the U87 was better suited for his voice and style. Halloway also is an audio engineer and has musical knowledge and previous vocal training, therefore, we both decided on using the U87 take. We continued to record his vocal on both microphones anyway, in case Halloway wanted to experiment and edit both takes as he will be doing his own production and mixing on his DAW. Any phase issues could be fixed later on by Halloway so from the start of the session we wanted to make sure both microphones were the same distance from the artist so he didn’t have to do too much in the mixing phase.

I didn’t have to do anything I wasn’t already familiar with as it was a pretty basic recording session, just sending a headphone mix to the artist after each recording and doing basic overdubs then duplicating the hooks throughout the track.
During the session we met another studio at campus that needed our help in the s6 studio, he was having issues setting up a headphone mix and playback to his artist. From my previous experiences in the s6, I knew how to resolve this issues and set it up quickly so we could get back to our session in the NEVE. These issues in the s6 can usually be resolved by restarting the s6. Here are images of their sessions and the way to set up a session in our s6 studio. The headphones are routed out of outputs 7-8 and the artist can hear themselves and other tracks through a simple bus send to the headphone auxiliary track.

I will be recording another session with Halloway soon for his second track.
