We had the opportunity to record two bands on campus in SAE’s Neve and Audient 8024 studio. Our lecturers sourced out bands that we could record to assist in our practices as audio engineers. First, we helped our lecturer Dylan Crawfoot, record Chris Ramsay and The Febs Band (http://thefebs.com/index.html). During the process, we learnt about Dylan’s workflow, microphone choices and techniques as well as other work methods while recording the band and accommodating to their requests. The final Pro Tools session was then given to us to mix and master, taking into consideration the sound the band wants to achieve as well as improving our mixes after professional feedback.
Being new to this genre, I had to do some research on the band and find out what kind of sound they have gone for in their previous tracks, so the reference track I went for was Just My Luck - Chris Ramsay & The Febs Band.
The following processing was used, to clean the spill from the kick, a gate was used then some EQ to roll off the high frequencies and reduce room hum which was around 330hz. Across all the drums, light compression was added to each element to control transients without losing the drummer’s dynamics, this was then bussed to an auxiliary track for parallel compression aiming to achieve the drum sound in ‘My Luck’.

The Bass and Guitars were then cleaned up using the same technique with EQs and for the guitar 2.0 channels which were overdubs of plucked notes, an expander was used to reduce the spill of the click track bleed from the headphones.

To achieve a similar vocal to the reference track, some EQ was used across both vocal channels as well as some hard compression. I also used a DeEsser on the lead vocal channel to control the noticeable sibilance. A vocal plate with adjusted HF cut and LP filter was used to give a similar reverb as the reference track.

Some minor automation was used across the vocal and guitar pluck channels when the volumed need to be controlled. After this all track were summed into a stereo audio channel for a print which I then added a limiter to bring up the level to match the reference.
