This week’s article raised the questions of how will we get paid to make creative projects. “How can you make a living while making creative projects? The typical answers we answered with were being on a freelance basis and not relying completely on our creative projects for a living when we get straight out of our graduate degree. As mentioned in the article, the author shares the same views as myself, ultimately I wish to own my own record label and studio collaborating with students that share the same influences, however we have to start somewhere.

As many other university students studying to get a job in their field of study, we have to find other work outside our discipline to pay for our day to day expenses. I took my hobby of DJing and decided to use this to get some income. As I further progress into my studies, I hope to better understand the gear I have available to me so I can collaborate with other students and start to build my brand of music. Being an indie artist will allow me to rely on getting paid directly by the consumers of my projects so I will more freedom on what I create and not be restricted to higher powers influencing my projects. I also agree with the author that ideally I would want my income to come from both working for a company as well as doing my personal projects on the side.
I always refer to Noah ‘40’ Shebib as he is a very influential and motivational figure for me, him and Aubrey Drake Graham (Drake). Drake and 40 both began their careers in acting before Drake was introduced to 40 as he was the ‘go to’ audio engineer in Toronto. Before 40 made the transition to music production he DJ’d under the name, DJ Decibel.
This is much like the transition I chose to make and knowing 40’s story before he came to fame, inspires me to push hard and hopefully one-day work with him on a project. Currently I am focusing on competing my course and creating a network with other students that share the same aspirations as myself so that we can form group like Drake and 40 because it is possible.
