Who are you now and where are we going? How are we the same? Some questions that were asked from the week 1 blog response tasks. Also shown in the article was a link to a YouTube clip of Melena Ryzik showing the inside of Pixar Studio Complex in California showing the environment where animation, audio, design and film specialists collaborate. Being a creative that will go on to work in the industry with other creative minds, it’s good to understand how we are similar despite our different discipline areas. Further in, media worker, Rosalind Gills, is mentioned for her ideas on media workers and how they are depicted.
Gills then goes on to talk about the life traits we share, entrepreneurism, short term, precarious work and long hours is some of those mentioned. I resonate strongly with those traits, especially with short term, precarious work and long hours. “intermittent work is endemic to life in new media”, I find that once I start a project, whether it be university related or my own practice pro tools session, it becomes something that is never fully done. I find that I will just chip away at it bit by bit and then move onto another project. Taking on several jobs, tasks or assignments means you have to be able to switch between projects without having the luxury of finding inspiration to complete one task before moving onto the next task. This then relates to the long hours we usually endure just to satisfy the project requirements. Even when I work on my own projects, it never feels complete because there is no right or wrong when it comes to making music as with any personal creative media project.
Noah ‘40’ Shebib, the man behind Drake’s sounds, is asked in an interview by Avid, how does he know when a track is complete. 40 simply says “I just know”. He explains that once he can listen to a track from start to end and “zone out” with nothing jumping out at him that he thinks doesn’t belong there, he knows it’s done.
For me though, I’m still in the early stages of learning how to understand the potential of pro tools therefore when I'm near the end of my course, I will be able to better understand what 40 is talking about. As I progress through my course and start to slowly understand what these successful producers and artists talk about, I will implement their ideas and methodology to help guide me in the direction of creating quality mixes like theirs.
